Critics of hypnotism refuse to see the value of the practice, claiming it is a joke or even that it is dangerous to surrender your control and offer your subconscious mind to another. However, over the centuries, the practice has proven to be an effective treatment in a vast array of afflictions, habits, diseases, and mental conditions. While controversial because skeptics continue to bash it, hypnosis has become a more and more popular alternative to dangerous medications when people are ready to make life changes and better themselves physically and emotionally.
The methods used in hypnotherapy are safe and occur in a controlled environment, meaning you can feel confident to release the tight hold you probably maintain over your mind and body. Once in a relaxed state, hypnotism will allow you to surrender to suggestions, with your subconscious mind taking over. Often, the underlying reasons causing any problem are buried outside of the reach of our consciousness, and this is the only way to access the root cause of whatever issue you are facing. By clearing the mind and removing self-imposed blockades or inhibitions, the reason you may be in pain physically or emotionally can be determined and then either dealt with or removed.
The goal of hypnotism is to identify and treat a root cause. Therefore, several sessions will be spent with the therapist getting to know you, probing your thoughts in the state of hypnosis so that he or she can better understand who you are at your core. Then the treatment will progress to an exercise in uncovering any memories, feelings, or other repressed ideas that may be causing you to suffer physically or emotionally. This may involve regression into your past, which is a core concept of hypnotism. After the root of your problem is identified, some time may be spent addressing that issue and trying to help you cope with it.
Eventually the uncovered issue will be introduced to the conscious mind, after which a combination of hypnotism and traditional therapy may be invoked to help you cope with the issue. Placing you under hypnosis returns to the power of suggestion, which can help you function more normally without the excess pain of whatever repressed idea was discovered. It will help you to overlook emotions regarding that discovery until your traditional therapy can help you to work through it on your own. In this case, hypnotism is an essential part of the healing process.
Using hypnotism to determine why you are predisposed to a particular affliction is not a solution that necessarily offers instant gratification. However, unlike medicines that often only mask the symptoms that are manifested as signs that there is an underlying problem, it can truly be a complete cure for whatever issues you face.
