Many people are sceptical about the ability to stop smoking using hypnotherapy and this is understandable, even though it is unfounded.
The first to stop smoking is to understand that smoking is an addiction and while we are well educated about the addictive qualities of nicotine, little if nothing has been discussed regarding the psychological effects of this particular addiction.
Smoking habits are formed as we create associative relationships between them and other things such as food, drinking or driving. In fact there are some that are not even aware that when they climb into their car it triggers a desire to light a cigarette whether we want one or not. After a while smoking becomes part of these daily practices. These are psychological cravings and they are just as real as chemical ones.
Importantly smoking becomes part of a persons coping mechanism and are used to help deal with pressures such as stress for instance. There are many more positive ways in which to learn to be clam without smoking though.
As most smokers know, cravings after quitting smoking continue, this is because the psychological cravings continue to drive the motivation.
This is where hypnosis helps as is the tool needed for re-learning by changing our subconscious motivations which in turn will change the associations and habits that drive the need to smoke. Hypnosis teaches new coping skills and together with a new attitude, this will make getting through the chemical addiction that much easier. The key to long term success is to address both the chemical and psychological addiction.
