Myths regarding hypnosis still abound such as that a hypnotist will be able to control a patient fully. Hypnotists are not going to make you bark like a dog if you don’t want to, if this is what you want there is a slight chance that a hypnotist will be able to help you accomplish it. But, if you approach a hypnotist with a request for a behaviour change that could harm yourself, your own motivation will most likely be enough to stop you following through with the suggestions given.
Another myth is that people think that they cannot be hypnotised. This has its roots in the fact that when you are under hypnosis you are in a normal state of consciousness. Today Hypnotherapists are trained in techniques that can help work through any resistance you may have about letting yourself go and this is why it works so very well.
Many people ask whether they can get stuck in a hypnosis state, no you can’t. At most you will drift off into sleep and wake up when you need to. If you have fallen prey to a party trick hypnotist, they cannot control you and you will not end up spending the rest of your life being suggestible each time someone snaps their fingers and tells you to roll over.
If you are afraid that you will have no memory of your experience, don’t be. While you are in a high state of relaxation, you are fully conscious and aware of what is going on around you and your focus is complete.
